Day Three: Learning to Be

Two blog posts in a day! 

Watch it Wednesday is all about discovering new stories and watching interesting developments in pop culture. A long standing tradition coined by my eleventh grade English teacher, Edwards. A lot of the time WiW was anime because that was the stuff that Edwards didn't really have time for. Occasionally we'd also branch into dramas and movies. Today I thought that continuing the legacy would be apropos.

Today we're talking academia.

While dredging through Hulu I stumbled upon a show called My Hero Academia. I didn't think much of it, other than I had seen quite a few people rave about it. I hadn't watched anime in about two to three months, the last show being a shojo anime. (READ: For those who aren't regular consumers of Japanese animation, Shojo is a genre of anime that is typically characterized by heavy romance and lots of sparkles). My Hero Academia wasn't really on my radar but lucky me The Boyfriend wanted to watch it. I'm nothing if not compliant, so into the depths of shonen anime I went (READ: Shonen anime is the opposite of shojo anime, typically characterized by long battle scenes and violence).

Thank goodness I'm compliant because this show is a gem. The characters are hilarious, Deku and his childhood best friend turned worst bully Kaachan are amazing foils to each other. All-Might is the all mighty (pun intended) pro hero who Deku idolizes, his sardonic and kind 'weak' side is amazing! I love that this show is very aware of its genre and audience but still manages to take huge risks like making Deku a crybaby. There is an overall tone of hopefulness that never leaves. As well as a really interesting narration by Deku as if the show were a flashback. 

Character and story aside, this show is visually stunning! The color and consistency are really fun, I also love small attentions to detail like All-Mights clothes getting bigger between forms and the hero's costumes being destroyed over time. The setting and music do a lot for this anime, nothing like Your Lie In April, but still fun and high energy making you more invested in the action. Another really cool thing is the interesting visuals for hero's quirks or powers, each character looks incredibly unique making background characters really stand out.

The first season is 13 episodes and the second is still ongoing. I'm really stoked for this anime and will happily continue as a fan. My Hero Academia is a great starter anime or a vet's new favorite. I am confident who ever watches this will be filled with a youthful vigor and feel a rush to fulfill their dreams. 

My Hero Academia earns 5/5 stars from me.

Figuring It Out by SWMRS

Summer: Life's What You Make It.

I was kicked out of summer school.
Super rad, I know. Summer really has been rough. I can't seem to get it right. But that right there is quitter talk. I have too many people relying on my success to indulge in quitter talk.

So what am I going to do about it?

1. Look into BYU summer school courses
2. Call my counselor and let her know the awesome news
3. maybe contact Edwards and tell her (? this option actually scares me)

What am I not going to do?

1. Mope
2. Get stuck on it

I am an immovable force of nature and honestly my summer school was really bad. My teacher wasn't there half the time and I'm pretty sure they had me help falsify documents. Also Major DB was exactly that, a major DB. I know that what's happened isn't good, I have three classes to fix and a limited amount of time to do so. I also have to find a mentor and figure out how I'm going to pass next year.

I really am better than this. I'm kinda super disappointed in myself because I F'ed up this badly.
This certainly isn't the end. But a good general knows when to make a tactical retreat.

So folks, this is your general, sounding the alarm.

Summer: Regularly Scheduled

We interrupt your regularly scheduled seclusion to bring you an update from the summer.
It's been a pretty solid time so far. Still haven't found a mentor, still haven't finished summer school, still haven't gotten enough sleep. I went to Vans Warped Tour on the 19th, I'm putting together a post on that. I'm also putting together a post on presidential candidates. A lot more research in the subject than I first thought. I'm still not completely in academic mode, even though I've been doing school work still. I've been a bit of a vegetable the last two weeks. I need to get to the whole writing, reading, nerdy summer that I love.

Good news? I've been watching Buffy the Vampire Slayer. It's been awesome, I forgot how much I love Joss Whedon. 

Today's post is just a quickie, letting you know that I'm still here. Just trying to make my brain work.

Day Sixty-Three: Of Mind Melds and Fruit.

Hello and welcome to the ghost town that has become of this blog.
I promise I've not been dead, I've just been extraordinarily busy for the beginning of summer. I've been watching two kids, who are absolutely lovely. While also attempting to circumnavigate the awfulness that is summer school. (Pay attention in class kids, lest you become the seventeen year old with three classes to re mediate.) I've also been attempting to find a mentor for senior project.
I did, however, manage to write a blog post at the end of the year.
"Day Fifty-Three: Holy F*#k.
Today is an amazing day.
I'm more than a little proud that I am passing all my classes and my google history was not displayed for the entirety of Ipoly to see. It's been a beautiful, chaotic last week. Everything seems to be happening at a million miles a minute. That's okay though because we're figuring it out one day at a time.
A look back on the week includes

• Another bout of habitual lateness
• Two lovely migraines
• The urge to commit homicide at least twice
• Actually doing my homework ahead of time
• And the feeling of hazy nostalgia of a year better spent trying

Yes, this year has been a wild ride (like I've written in every yearbook) and I didn't think that I could be any more content. Despite that, I am. I'm so pleased and I feel so damn elated that I was able to do better. I was able to make a huge improvement in my mental, physical, and emotional health this year. As well as my grades!

I'm incredibly proud of all my friends who did amazing things this year, I'm proud of the friends that I had and lost this year. Most of all, I'm proud of my survival. My Slytherin spirit and determination not to lose. Tooth and nail, blood and tears, thick and thin. It's been a magnificent year and I can't wait for my next big adventure.

Y'know it's pretty funny when I write several drafts and forget to post them because I've been so busy doing other things. Hi, blog that I've let fall into ruin, how are you?

I'm doing okay, been having pretty awful migraines as of late and I haven't really had the funds to have any adventures. I have, however, been able to work on my other blogs and social media. Fun stuff I know. I've also dedicated a small chunk of my life to Critical Role, a Geek and Sundry show about Dungeons and Dragons. The show features an array of voice actors and actresses and is just awesome.

I also had an adventure in child watching, which was fun. I got to take them on random travels and give them ice cream and not tell their mom. I felt like the super cool kid watcher for awhile and was able to get some summer school done in the mean time. I've also been in my constant struggle with Major Douche Bag, my evil summer school "advisor."
Over all it's been a pretty grand adventure for the start of the summer. I hope to get back to some semblance of a schedule with this blog, but I make no promises.

Day Forty-Nine: Fitness and a Long Week.

It's my last week as a Junior.
Oh my what a year it's been! Plenty of ups and downs. Changes coming in from left and right. My first prediction of 2015 as a 'weird' year has been pretty accurate up to this point. I know at some point I was ready to call it quits, now I'm here.

What does this have to do with knitting? Nothing, knitting still hasn't happened. I'm scrapping the kitty hat until a better day arises. That does however lead us to to more changes. I'm switching up the tides.

First things first, Anime Tuesday is now Watch It Tuesday. Also It's been moved to Wednesday, therefore I dub it Watch It Wednesday [;)] Fashion posts are now being moved to Tuesday, and come summer I'll be doing more writing Wednesdays.
Yes, this horrendous year is coming to a close. From crazy groups to unexpected friends, this year has given me the full "Grown Up" treatment.

Rad. 

A little update on the whole workout/squat challenge thing. I feel better because I'm getting deeper, more restful sleep. Working out has become a huge steam burner, so if I'm angry or anxious, I just workout and feel a lot better. It feels good to be active and actually doing something. I never thought that exercise could be fun, but hey, I'm wrong a lot.
My mom has put a rule on me for the summer, I'm required to leave the house four times a week this summer. Where and who I'm going to be going with is up in the air. If you have suggestions for an outing, let me know.  I'm also not allowed to sleep until noon, so basically I'm not supposed to enjoy my summer downtime. 

I think that explains most of what's been going on recently. Hopefully you'll understand my absence.

Day Thirty-Six: Long Days.

Guess who still hasn't watched any anime?
I've read tons of BL manga though. (Curse you BL provider!) 

I might be opening an age old can of worms by delving into this topic. I'm running out of anime topics to cover that don't directly relate to shows. 

The first thing you have to know is what's the difference? Any long suffering anime fan will tell you that "Subs are so much better and they are the only way to watch 
anime.*flippy eye roll hair thing*" Any overzealous newb will tell you "It doesn't matter because anime is so freaking awesome!!!"  (look for them in the age range from 12-14.)  The actual facts are something you'll get to decide soon enough.
Back to the topic at hand, what do these strange words mean Hunter? I'm glad you asked.

Sub is an abbreviated word for subtitled. Commonly subtitles appear on foreign films (if you live in a primarily English speaking country, like America.) and they'll often show up on anime. Subtitles allow the original words to be translated into another language and transcribed, so those with hearing disabilities can still enjoy the media. Subtitles are often seen as scary by people who are not familiar with them, and depending on the show, they can run a little fast. ( I attribute my ability to read 200 words a minute to watching anime and foreign films as a child.) Subs also allow quirks in language to be displayed for the audience.

Dubs are actually misnamed. The process of adding voice to a type of media in post is called dubbing. When people are talking about an anime that's been "dubbed" in English, they're actually talking about an anime that has been re-dubbed in English. At it's core a dub is a type of media that has been taken from it's original language into a new language with new voice actors. My favorite instance of a re-dub is Snape from the Spanish Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban. Dubbing has many perks such as getting to hear a new performance of your favorite characters, not having to read while trying to focus on the action, and funny mistranslations. 
More often than not you get a bad dub. (Looking at you 90's Sailor Moon, The original Full Metal Alchemist, and you Naruto.) When the dub is so awful it actually changes the storyline or causes a lot more confusion than needed.
What's my opinion? I tend to watch more subs than I watch dubs. I like being able to appreciate the actors performance with the original creators intent. You never really know how involved the original creators are in the making of a dub. I also find it distracting when the animation doesn't sync up with the English dialog. That's just my personal preference. While I'll watch most of my anime subbed, I love the Host Club dub.

I've gotten the okay from Brian on Log Horizon. I will definitely be watching the show soon, but I want to get through some of the other anime on my list before I tackle it. Edwards has highly recommended Toradora for anyone looking for something to watch this weekend. The twenty-five or so episodes are a quick watch, so said she. It's on my list.

Day Thirty-Five: Of Futile Efforts

Why does everything have to cost so much money/time/resources?
Knitting update: We have made little to no progress on the kitty hat. I need a smaller magic loop (after attempting to cast on 4 times I have given up. there is no way to make my loop hat sized.) But we will not waver!

Life update: I did a bunch of cartwheels and now I'm in serious physical pain, which doesn't help that I'm hiking up hills tomorrow, if it doesn't rain (please don't rain.)

Blog Update: I attempted to cook yesterday, unfortunately before I could get into the kitchen, my mother had already made spaghetti. I'm going to teach you the sauce recipe eventually, but that meant I couldn't do chow mein. Not like I had the ingredients for chow mein. I'll get used to the whole "cooking for an audience" thing eventually. I will say that I had the most amazing failure ever in making microwave mug cookies.
What you may not know is, I'm actually an awful chef. I don't really follow the instructions, I'm very much a "wing it" kinda gal. That being said most of what I cook tastes good, even if it isn't pretty.

Day Thirty(?): Not Having Time.

I haven't watched Say I Love You yet.
In true procrastinator fashion, I've taken to putting off my hobbies for more interesting things. Like chemistry. (For those who don't know me, the former was an example of dripping sarcasm.) School, as it often does, has taken up most of my time. Leaving me with very little to watch things. I'm behind on anime, Game Of Thrones, and my movie list.
The queue grows daily. Just today I added three more manga and a new anime. I really need to spend weekends watching instead of sleeping.
That being said, I do have a queue. While this may hearken back to a previous anime post, I'm going to give you three titles on said queue and give my brief expectations of each. I can assure you that whatever knowledge I have comes from people who recommended the series to me or what I can glean from images.

Let's get started.

• Number one on the list is: Magi; The Labyrinth of Magic.

Apparently the blue one is Aladdin. It feels very "1001 nights"-esque. Everyone I know who've seen it give it great reviews.

My Expectation:
It's going to be a cheesy slapstick comedy. I believe the blue one is a boy, so you'll have a lot of stereotypical boy humor. It has two seasons, both running 25 episodes, so I expect there to be a basic central plot with minimal filler.

• Number Two: My Little Monster.

The one on the chain is Haru. Everyone loves Haru. Haru deserves more then 13 episodes (because apparently this is only one season. I swear to the powers that be, Edwards, if this is all cliff hanger-y I will not be a happy duck.) I have no actual clue what this anime is about.

My Expectation:
There is a dude on a chain and a mostly apathetic girl. I assume the dude will be over eager and dog-like. Also in my image search, a chicken appeared multiple times. I'm unsure as to if this is relevent or not.

• Number Three: Log Horizon.

The tiny purple on is Akatsuki.

My Expectation:
I'm not really into the whole "MMORPG/Video game Anime." So I'm not really sure as to how I'll feel about this. It comes well vetted by two of my most trusted anime advisers (looking at you Brian) but I still have some hesitation coming into it. I feel like I'll get bored because with a lot of video game anime, nothing holds consequence. Because they are just avatars, I never really feel a bond with the characters. Hopefully that will be different with Log Horizon.

Day Sixteen: Manga VS Anime.

 

Guess who finished "Love Stage!"?

It's a lovely BL-anime (BL, for all the anime novices, stands for boy love or boys love) filled with sparkles, moe, and nose bleeds. It end's in a semi-cliffhanger. You could end the series on that note or you could continue on in the manga.

That got me thinking about the pros and cons of anime vs manga. The argument goes much like the old books vs film. It is said that when you adapt, you lose detail and often have more filler. While this is true for the long running anime (such as Naruto or Bleach.) I'm not too sure that it is true for short run anime like Love Stage!

So I present to you, in spirit of anime day,

• Pretty colors!

• Voice actors bringing life to the character (Talking about you octopimp. Freaking love Thugisa...)

• Anyone can watch

• Leaves out detail!

Day shmglff: For Sooth, For Shame, For Better Metal.

I didn't update. The Internet ate my drafts and I didn't update.
Good news though, since I didn't update last week nothing of consequence is happening I'm sorry. I'm writing a short story-light novel-"basically it's fanfiction at this point". All original work so it's not actual fanfiction but you get the picture. Because of this, I might be a little busy and I've decided to change it up.




This week we'll be getting both our first look at Writing class and Book Club. May 1st is a Friday and the first Friday of every month is book club! (Give me suggestions on what to read, I will happily take them...) On Wednesday, since it is another crazy day, I'll be doing writing class. Or, more aptly put, the one where I show you what I'm working on and how I do the thing. I'm quite excited.





I was not able to complete (or even start) last week's knitting project, because I didn't get the yarn required. I may revisit the Harry Potter book scarves at a later date but as we say, New week- new project.

Day Nine: Senpai.

A very quick update today.
It's a weird week and I'm a little bit frazzled. I thought I would talk to you about what's on my "To Watch" list.
So without further ado, or introduction, I give you:

I have no Idea what this one is about, Noragami has
been endlessly recommended, but never really
explained. Verdict: Excited.

way, not the douche-y kid way. Also apparently adorable.

There are a lot of anime that are on my list this summer that I hope I'm able to file through. While these are some of my new anime. I have some that I need to rewatch and catch up on. Long nights ahead.

This is really just a quick list, put together by a couple of friends. Most anime I watch are suggestions, I trust my friends to know when I would hate something, because I think they know me well enough.

I have no real words to describe this other than
a magical girl anime, but boys. I also don't know
what it's actually called, nor do I care. Much like
how I first was with Haikyuu!!

Pretty sure that's all I have for you today. Like I said, it's been a crazy week and it's only Tuesday. This blog will continue even in the craziness because, that's just how I roll.

Day 5: What The Week Brought.

Hello sweet and lovely people who are tuning into this week wrap up.
I didn't post yesterday because I was asleep! It was a beautiful sleep, and I've started to plan ahead for next week if I need to sleep again. So far this week has been so exhausting. For some reason I just can't keep my eyes open. It might have been the two days I spent staying up till five watching Shigatsu.




With that being said let's have our week review shall we?

• We started the blog!
• Oh yes my friends, it happened, the blog has actual well thought out posts on it and I only missed one day. A rousing success!
• I got most of the way done with this weeks knitting! 
• I only have to decrease and bind off, which I need Idalia to teach me how to do. I technically have until Sunday to finish so remain faithful.
• I got to episode seventeen in Shigatsu!
• No, Brian, I have yet to finish. It's coming, the tears are on their way I promise.
• I've only slept in the car once this week.
• 100 (E/A+) on the Macbeth film.
• The presentation was a rousing success, which I am super proud of because it was my baby. That's what two weeks of work gets you kids.
• 30-ish days of school left.
• Was only absent for a block and a half.
• Got Van's Warped Tour ticket!! (Pomona date. If you're there and not, like, 80. Come say hi!)

Accomplishments!!!

Really, though. This blog is becoming something that means a lot to me and we had quite the turnout for our first week! I'm super proud of what we accomplished because it was actual things. 

There is so much more in store here on Unraveled. I'm trying to plan some fun adventures and I hope you'll be a part of this productive journey with me.

Day Two: Sports Anime Phenomena

From Free! to shining Free! Eternal Summer I am obsessed with sports anime.

          As far as I can tell, the first sports anime I ever watched was Prince Of Tennis back when I was six. I don't remember much about the show (which should be no surprise because I hardly remember what I ate for breakfast) I really enjoyed Prince Of Tennis. It should then come as no surprise that 11 years later when I binge watched all of Haikyuu! (more commonly known as Volleyball Anime) I would enjoy it too.

          The funny thing is, I hate sports. I don't like running, I hate being sweaty, and I think sports games are boring. Who wants to sit in the heat for an hour to watch a bunch of dudes run around each other? Despite all this, I love sports anime. Anime like Haikyuu! keep me on the edge of my seat and I actually feel anxious. I want them to win. It's not just about the characters or their lives. I want Karasuno to kick ass and be able to make it to Tokyo. 

                  Sports anime give me a newer understanding of the sport and characters who love it more than anything. In honor of that, I give you;

5) Prince Of Tennis (Tennis Anime)

       This is a classic. Started in 1999 ended in 2008. Prince Of Tennis has a fun vintage feel while not seeming too cheesy. The characters are lovable, and the bonds they make together will make your heart feel warm and fuzzy.

4) Suzuka (Track Anime)

       Another well loved classic. This sports anime is all about love. A really cheesy, short show to pull you into the sports anime cult. With a character driven plot, wacky antics, and a manic pixie dream girl long jumper. There is no way to go wrong.

3) Kuroko No Basuke (Basketball Anime)

     The Basketball That Kuroko Plays. That's the American title of this anime, and such an injustice. This anime is so crammed full of feels I had to take a break from it to retain my sanity. The story follows five kids who got the nickname "The Generation of Miracles." and their Phantom Sixth man (that's Kuroko.) I'm not going to talk about this one as much, because we could get into spoiler territory very easy. It's a fun show that makes you feel for the characters and feel for the team. FOR THE BASKETBALL.

2) Free! (Swimming Anime)

          This anime has made me cry twice. Should I have been crying? No. But you'll love the characters so much, that when they talk about their back stories your kokoro will be dokidoki-ing for months. It's a newer anime, so the colors are rich, the animation is great, and the boys are pretty. It's very fanservice heavy, but it's so good. There are 22 episodes per seasons and two seasons to watch. Then I highly recommend watching the abridged version 50% Off.

1) Haikyuu! (Volleyball Anime)

          I wont waste your time, I love this anime so much. It's the anime that brought me back to anime. It makes me cry on a regular basis. I think about the characters during my everyday life. I love this anime. From the characters to the animation this show has it all. You will fall in love with the Tiny 10, and if you don't there will be a character you will. It's about the team, it's about the year threes, it's about the heart break. Watch this anime. There are twenty-five episodes. The story continues in the manga. Watch this anime.
